Irish Blood Donations

Published on September 4, 2025

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is urging people in the areas to donate blood following the recent spell of hot weather, which has led to a noticeable drop in donations.  With hospitals still requiring a steady supply of blood every day, the IBTS is asking regular donors and new volunteers to help make up the fall in donations experienced during the recent hot spell.

“Demand from Irish hospitals has not slowed down,” said Alex O’Connor, IBTS Recruitment Executive. “Your donation can help ensure patients continue to get the blood they urgently need. Giving blood takes less than an hour and could mean the world to someone in need.

September is World Blood Cancer Month which raise awareness for leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and related blood disorders. 65% of blood collected at Irish Clinics goes to support Irish cancer victims so donating is another solid way for the community to offer their support”

Irish hospital’s demand for blood continues to rise month on month. 3,000 blood donations are needed each week just to keep pace.   All blood types are needed.

Every single donation makes a profound difference. Blood is a lifeline for thousands of patients every year – from those undergoing complex surgeries, individuals battling cancer and leukaemia requiring chemotherapy, to mothers experiencing complications during childbirth, and victims of serious accidents. One unit of blood can save or significantly improve the lives of up to three people.
